Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) is pleased to announce the opening of Sammy Tonight! A Tribute to Sammy Davis, Jr. The musical revue features De’Zhon Fields who has traveled the world showcasing the legendary icon. Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe Artistic Director Nate Jacobs has collaborated with Fields to create an original WBTT Sammy Tonight, featuring songs considered “Sammy Davis classics” as well as other music from that era. The show opens on Friday, March 9th and runs through Sunday, April 1st. Tickets are $28. Evening performances run Tuesday through Saturday at 8:00 pm. Matinees are at 2:00 pm on Sundays.
“We have a great evening’s entertainment planned for our Sammy Tonight,” Founder and Artistic Director Nate Jacobs remarked. “We’ve taken the show performed by Mr. Fields and broadened it into a musical revue for the Troupe. Each member of the Rat Pack stood on his own as a strong individual performer. This trip back in time promises to deliver high energy, great talent and lots of fun.”
De’Zon Fields has been singing and dancing since performing in school and church plays at 10 years old. Being told most of his life that he looked like Sammy Davis Jr., he decided to research the performer and realized he identified with him in many ways. He began performing tribute shows in his hometown of Vancouver, Washington and has continued to portray him in many theatrical productions all over the world. In Sammy Tonight, the multi-talented De’Zhon Fields will be supported by three members of WBTT who will act as backup singers for the great Sammy Davis Jr. Regulars to WBTT will recognize Tsadok Porter and Santoy Campbell who appeared in the season opener Love Sung in the Key of Aretha. The third member of the group will be Ebony Lavender who performed with the Troupe in a past production of Black Nativity. Among the great hits to be enjoyed during the show will be many of the favorites associated with that time, including Old Black Magic, Mr. Bojangles, Candyman and I’ve Got the World On a String.
“Ticket sales for this show have been very strong and we haven’t even sung the first note yet,” continued Jacobs. “That just shows the power of this iconic performer still today. Sammy Davis Jr. captivated so many fans during his amazing career as a singer, actor, dancer and comedienne. Sammy Davis Jr. had it all and so will our show Sammy Tonight.”
